How to Keep Kids’ Crafts Clean in 5 Easy Steps

1: Lay Down a Tablecloth or Sheet

It is much easier to treat and wash a stubborn stain from a tablecloth than a delicate piece of furniture. Wood grain tends to soak in stains… I know because my poor wooden floor has a number of washable marker pen stains. Make life easier for yourself and cover the table. When it comes to the kids themselves, I have tried using protective bibs but my kids hate them and I feel like the creative mojo is lost in making them change. 2: Make Supplies Accessible & Use Low-Level Containers

Most of the messy stuff happens when kids can’t reach what they need to create their masterpiece. If you have multiple kids, group them together closely or give them a little workstation of supplies each. ​

 

3: Get Clothes in the Wash Straight Away

Permanent staining is much more likely to occur if you let paint and wet mess dry into the fabric. Once you’ve finished crafting, get everything in the wash straight away. I washed our fingerpaint and glue out without any special treatment, but if you are concerned you can pretreat using Persil laundry detergent. Personally, I worry more about food stains like food dyes, tomato or the dreaded turmeric… curry stains are the worst!​
