My three kids were given loads of books for Christmas, so it’s the perfect time to get stuck into a project that’s been on my mind for a while. We are lucky to have a big playroom at home, and it’s full of unused potential for adorable spaces. I feel like I’ve become a bit hooked on the color blue recently, so wanted some fresh ideas for my colorful playroom reading nook. I turned to the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color Collections of the Year for inspiration and this is what happened…
My daughter has a few books which are real keepers, beautifully made books to treasure for years to come. Although we’ve always taught our kids all books are precious, the twins have a little way to go before they’re going to be careful with some of the pretties. Therefore I wanted to create vertically tiered display storage that can show off the best of our books and keep the precious ones out of toddler reach.
I also wanted to create a cozy reading spot. I love canopies, teepees, and tents in kids’ spaces, but we’ve previously never had one in the house. I decided to keep things on a budget and make one myself.
Playroom Nook Before
Those of you following my decluttering journey will know we are battling to convert our vast DVD collection onto a hard drive. This area used to be our DVD storage and removing the clutter is giving it a new lease of life. It’s a difficult space because it’s at the top of the stairs, and I didn’t want any furniture the kids could climb on near the half wall.
As you can see, we’re lacking some major playroom vibes and I needed to bring some color to the space to define it and inject some fun!
Choosing a Color
Choosing a color on its own can cause disappointment when you realize the furniture or finishes you have don’t coordinate properly. Creating a color palette or mood board can help visualize the project but you can take the guesswork and frustration out of coordinating colors in your home by using one of the new HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color Collections of the Year
With four on-trend Color Collections from HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams, it’s easier than ever to bring harmony to your home. Each Color Collection has a range of colors that go together in any combination, helping take the guesswork out of choosing color and giving your home a sense of room-to-room harmony. All you have to do is choose the designer-inspired look you want to achieve from themes like Next Journey, Future Thinker, Thoughtful Living or Individual Mix.
You can also use your dedicated Color Collection to inspire more than just paint colors! Look for similar hues in the upholstery, artwork, and other pieces you decorate with for a perfectly coordinated look. Don’t forget to consider your flooring in this palette too, it makes up a big chunk of the visible surfaces.
I chose PARAKEET (HGSW1243) a color from the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams Individual Mix 2018 Color Collection of the Year. This color would not have initially come to mind but when I browsed through the Color Collections, each with a palette of 8 colors that work together, Individual Mix caught my eye. It reminded me of my kids’ dentist… stick with me here… their dentist has the most amazing interior design! I drool over it (pun intended) every time I go. It is clearly professionally designed and has a forest theme, with bright greens, oranges, grays, and whites. It’s fab!
So, I decided to bring the dentist home and create a colorful playroom reading nook with this gorgeous green from the Individual Mix Color Collection.
The paint, HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint and Primer, went on great. The INFINITY part is important because it goes a lot further and is perfect for covering with bolder colors. I captured my handiwork on video, including the Twins’ finding the makeover very entertaining!
Colorful Playroom Reading Nook: The Result
The color is amazing! I’m so glad I moved away from blue and went bold with green. The canopy was really easy to make out of a pair of curtains I found on clearance. Put simply, I cut a chunk off the bottom and sewed it to the top, using a piece of plumbing pipe for the hoop. I followed this tutorial from Hand Maid Tales, but I used 7ft of pipe and cut 15″ off the curtains because I found 6ft a little tough to bend around on itself.
The books are on simple picture ledges, and I love that our fancy, big-girl books are out of reach for those cheeky toddlers!
The rope lights add a really pretty touch to the canopy, and all three kids have been having fun with it. I caught the cat curled up in there last night so it’s a hit with everyone!
Where to Get HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams
You can check out HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color Collections of the Year at Lowe’s. We all went together to get our paint mixed, but I’m so glad I used the coordinated Color Collections because the wall of samples can be a little overwhelming.
If you have a project you’ve been thinking about for a while and need some color inspiration, I recommend trying one of the 2018 Color Collections of the Year to help keep your color coordination on track. Good luck with your next project and do let me know what you think about our colorful playroom reading nook!
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
OMGosh I love the color and such a great idea also! My daughter just created her own book reading room and it is so nice and cozy. The canopy adds such a cool private feeling I’m sure in her room. Love it!
Thanks! And I love that your daughter has created her own little space just how she likes it!
We just finished a project, but there is room for another project to be able to use this brand of paint. Nice playroom and I am sure it will bring lots of joy and laughter in years to come.
It is definitely a joyous fun color!
I’ve been wanting to redecorate my son’s room to match his personality. This reading nook has my mind rolling with new ideas. I especially love the wall color.
Oh great, I love it when a new wave of ideas come to mind! Good luck with your decorating!
Firstly, I am in love with the color selected for the wall. It is such a great color. Secondly, I like the nook idea, it is very different and I most certainly will adopt it. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad you like it, I’m really pleased with it!
That’s a great color! I love the canopy too. Right now my toddler’s book nest is just a papasan chair pillow on the floor. I need to get a canopy. She would love that!
The Twins love bundling int here together, too cute!
OMG I love what you did with this room! Makes me wish that I had this when I was a child 😉 Haha. (Also, I love the hue you picked, it’s easy on the eyes!)
Thanks! I’m loving the green!
It is looking pretty. Great idea to design kid’s room. Just loved it.
